Encouragement from Martin Luther

Our close friend, Jon Gardner, passed along this quote from Martin Luther. You might be surprised to see what Luther said about schools 500 years ago...I sure was surprised at Luther's insight!! We were quite encouraged to know that we are making the Scripture supreme in our children's education....unlike education institutions.
"I am much afraid that the schools will prove the very gates of hell, unless they diligently labour in explaining the Holy Scriptures, and engraving them in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where the scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which means are not unceasingly occupied with the Word of God must be corrupt." (Martin Luther)

On a somewhate similar note, we have discussed the contents of Machiavelli's The Prince. Our kids are amazed that someone would espouse the philosophy of "the ends justify the means". They are so used to processing their thoughts and decisions through the grid of God's Scriptures. Although we are encouraged to see their thought processes, we still strive to teach them more Biblical principles in which they can use through the rest of their lives. Thank goodness for curricula that encourage Biblical worldview such as Truth Quest History and Gileskirk Humanities.
As we talked about this Machiavellian concept, we discussed the fact that America's mindset, for the most part, is based on doing whatever is necessary in order to accomplish one's goals. We desire a more Biblical mindset-one of following God's Word to determine the means in which one will accomplish the end goal. We realize a change to Biblical thinking will not happen overnight, but will take a few generations. It is our prayer and hope that this change to follow God's Word will happen in our grandchildren's lifetimes.

How are you preparing your children for a Biblical worldview in life? If you don't have a way to prepare try using Truth Quest History or Gileskirk Humanities.

Generosity with Kids

You may use those verses as a springboard for discussion at home. These verses will be random, not in any sequential order. In the future, I hope to combine all of these columns and make them available in book form.
To begin with, I would like to discuss generosity, money and what the Bible has to say about this.
He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor. Proverbs 22:9
Who will be blessing those who are generous? The Lord blesses us when we are generous with what He has given us. There are two aspect in being generous. First, we must not hoarde what we have. When there is a need in our community, our church, or even our family, we should not keep it to ourselves. Secondly, we should scatter what God has given to us. According to Proverbs 22:9, what does the generous person do? He gives bread to the poor; he scatters what he has to others.
He who gives to the poor will not lack, but he who hides his eyes will have many curses. Proverbs 28:27
John Bunyan wrote a short poem which sums up the idea in this next verse.
There was a man,
Some thought him mad.
The more he gave,
The more he had.
This little poem describes the way God deals with those who are generous. He blesses us when we give to those in need. It seems interesting to me that in both verses, the word "eye" is used. Why might this be? We must see with our eyes opportunities to be generous. One who is on the lookout for ways to share what God has given them is one who has a generous eye, an unhidden eye. Opportunities for generosity may be found in giving materially, but also they may be found in the realm of hospitality. We should be generous with our home, reaching out to those in need. God blesses those who are generous with their home, as well. Hospitality is a lost art in American society today. As believers, we can change this aspect of society by having others into our home.
When we minister to the poor, we are giving to the Lord. Blessing from Him will fall on us.

Real Responsibility

We just finished a weekend in Houston at the annual book fair. If it weren't for my 2 teenage daughters and soon to be teenage son, we would have a hard time working these book fairs. Our kids are great at work and responsibility. I think we, as homeschoolers, need to give our kids real responsibilities. When we do, they should respond in a positive way.

Our kids feel great when they know they have contributed to our family and the work we have set before us. Have you given your teens any real responsibility lately?

Structure Time, Not Content

This past weekend I gave a talk about Leadership Education. As I was studying and preparing my talk, I was struck by the importance of structuring the time for our kids to study, not necessarily the content. Homeschool moms spend so much time worrying about the content of their kids' studies when they could probably spend less time worrying about the details and more time inspiring kids to "own" their education for themselves. When we structure the time to study, we encourage our kids to "own" their education.

For instance, we can allocate 3-4 hours daily for younger kids to study and 6-10 hours daily for older kids to study. What they study during that time period should somewhat be decided by YOUR kids. Let them decide what they will study. If they are studying 8 hours daily, 5 days week for 4 years, they will put in 5000-8000 hours of study. Don't you think they will cover all the basics (that grandma wants) during that time? This will develop leaders and not followers who simply do the assignments mom gives them.
