GK Chesterton on Old Books

You can find all the new ideas in the old books; only there you will find them balanced, kept in their place , and sometimes contradicted and overcome by other and better ideas. The great writers did not neglect a fad because they had not thought of it, but because they had thought of it and of all the answers to it as well. GK Chesterton

What a great outlook on books. Many homeschoolers know the importance of reading classics, books & stories that have endured over time. Why not read a classic with your kids this week? You will see ideas in those old books that are true today.

Great classics for boys can be found on Books for Boys.

Thinking Outside the Box with Jobs

Our first Family Entrepreneur Conference & Retreat was a huge success. By the end of the weekend, I was even motivated to go home and implement some new ideas...and I was one of the speakers! Our visits with other homeschool entrepreneurs, Jim Erskine, Mary Jo Tate and the Rushton family, encouraged me to continue in my endeavors. When I see other homeschool families thinking outside the box when it comes to jobs, I am excited.

I know this is what I want to pass on to my own children. I want them to have the freedom to choose how they will earn money, not be enslaved to getting a job from someone else. There are other families out there who are like-minded in this area. These are the families I want my children to know so they can see college & a job are not always necessary to provide for a family. Too often my children think "everyone" just goes on to college after high school, but this is not true or necessary. When they see other teens starting their own business and make it successful, they can think outside the box when it comes to getting a job.

I Love The South

We are in the South for 2 months and I love it! This past weekend in Alabama was so cool because you could say y'all and noone would look at you funny. Since we moved to Idaho last August, I became very aware of how often I said y'all. But, this weekend I heard more people say y'all than I do in the great state of Texas.

I had never spent much time in Alabama before this past week and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. EVERYONE was so friendly. When I walked down the hall of my hotel, there was always a friendly "hi" from the person I passed. It reminded me of our years at Texas A & M where you said "howdy" to everyone that passed you. Our stay was most pleasant because of the Rushton's hospitality. Cindy Rushton and her family welcomed us and made us feel right at home while we spent the weekend ministering with her family.

Thanks for a wonderful stay in Alabama and a great weekend.

Are You Training Leaders or Followers?

One thing that struck me as I prepared my workshop for this past weekend's retreat was the way most homeschoolers train their children to be followers. Most of us desire our children to be leaders as adults, but the way we school our children so they will follow.

What do I mean by this? When I give my children a list of assignments, they "follow" me by completing these assignments. They do not take the lead in their education when they do this. If we want our children to become leaders, we need to give them opportunities to lead in their education. One way you can do this is to allow your children to choose what they want to study. When they make this choice, they are "leading" in their education, taking ownership of what they study.

Does that mean you allow them to choose everything they study? The answer for me is "no". There are still concepts and subject areas that Steve & I want them to study. This past spring we told my older ones what they were required to continue studying.. Gileskirk Humanities with George Grant and their writing class through Zarafa Tutorials. You might notice this did not include math. Oh no, you might say. Well, my 9th grader continued to study Algebra. She saw importance for herself in continuing this study. Do you think she is learning more as she studies Algebra? I believe she is because she knows we are not making her study this. It is her choice.

How will you homeschool this coming year? Will you allow your children to "lead" in their studies or "follow" you (and do the minimum required)?

If you want to read more about this idea, consider reading Thomas Jefferson Education or listening to some of their CDs.
