Encouraging Ownership in Our Kids Education

Encouraging Ownership in Our Kids Education - 1:43 PM, Jul. 1, 2005
It just struck me this past spring how much my style of education was developing followers instead of leaders. When I asked my daughter what she wanted to study, she told me to tell her what to do and she would do it. I realized she was a follower. So, I have been thinking about how to develop leadership in my kids as they homeschool. One thing we decided to do was allow our kids to make some choices in their own education. This goes along with the concept: Structure Time, Not Content.

In March my husband and I decided that the girls needed to continue their humanities class (history, literature) and online writing class. After that, each girl would decide what else they would study. Did you notice we did not required them to continue math???? My 14 yo decided to continue studying Algebra and Biology. I was very surprised because she does not like math. But, she realized there was a future purpose in finishing algebra. My 17yo decided not to finish Algebra 2. Am I disappointed? Not really. I believe she can pick up that Algebra 2 book and learn what she needs in a short time. . . if she ever "needs to finish".

What will you require your kids to study this coming school year? What will you allow them to "own" or "take leadership" in their education?

Great Mentors

According to Oliver DeMille, great mentors are continually learning & pushing themselves....read classics...study hard!

They not only give assignments, BUT also accept their students and allow their students to begin practicing leadership. As I stated in the previous example, a key part of setting the example is allowing students to take the lead as often as possible. This is usually HARD for moms Take it from a "control mom", it is hard to let go and allow your kids to practice leadership in their education. BUT, in the long run your kids will be more mature and a real leader.

Bookstores

Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?
Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887)

If a book is worth reading, it is worth buying.
John Ruskin (1819-1900)

When I get a little money, I buy books; and if there is any left, I buy food and clothes.
Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536)

My weakness is used bookstores!!! Ask my kids.

Sabbath Prayer

I just received our Sabbath prayer for this weekend and thought I'd pass it along. It's from Doug Wilson at Christ Church.

Gracious Father and God, Your kindness toward Your people is an everlasting river, and we thank You that we will never arrive at the end of it. We know that You call us to worship You before all things, and that You summon us to this for our good and Your glory. We praise You as the God of Sabbath, and as the Sabbath God, the God of all salvation rest. We know that all work is rested on the foundation stones of Your grace, and we know that these foundation stones can never be moved. We thank You for the fellowship of our company, for the wine, for the food, for the hands that prepared the food, and for the privilege of approaching You in worship tomorrow. We give Your glory and thanksgiving now IN JESUS' NAME, AMEN
