Our Books Arrived Today

Our 800-pound palette of books arrived today. I am so excited because it wasn't suppose to arrive until next week sometime. I really didn't want to disappoint customers that had placed orders. Now, we are spending the day unloading boxes and shipping books that were ordered this week. We decided to give our kids a little more room in our van when we drove home to Idaho last week, so we shipped our inventory of books and some personal books. At least the kids had some leg room on our 30-plus hours of driving.

Thankful for the arrival of books!!! Back to unpacking!

Resources about American Wars for Independence

I was responding to a post on Homeschooling is Life Blog and wanted to include some of it here, as well. These resources are an excellent example of my post earlier today encouraging moms to educate themselves with audio resources. I know these cd series have been instrumental in a better understanding of American history.

My favorite sources to learn more about the Revolutionary War are:

America: First 350 Years, by Steve Wilkins (cassettes/cd-mp3 and notebook)
Revolutions That Never Were: The Wars for American & Southern Independence, by Doug Wilson, Steve Wilkins - In these six lectures, Wilkins and Wilson make the case that the War for Independence was not revolutionary and that the War Between the States was truly revolutionary.

My husband speaks at homeschool conferences about the Revolutionary War and the War Between the States. His workshop is title Un-Revisionist History and usually gets people's attention since it is a bit un-politically correct. Most of his information comes from the sources listed above.

When I listened to these lectures, I began to re-think my view of American history and the causes/effects of each of these two wars. Don't buy either of these sets, if you don't want to think outside the box.

We sell the Revolutions series (6 cds) for $18.00 and another cd series called America's Wars (8 cds) for $24. I am working on getting the First 350 years back in stock in mp3 format. It would be one cd, which we can easily stock. If you decide you want any of these items, send me an e-mail (kerry{at}CurriculumConnection{dot}net).

Mom's Self Study

I am a big proponent of mom studying herself so she can mentor her own kids in their education. This is what truly makes leaders, the mentoring process. Reading classics is a great way to start your own education. Another way is to listen to audio cds. I have learned so much from lecture series or sermons that are on audio cd. While traveling from Texas to our home in Idaho, I listened to a Confederate Heritage conference that my oldest daughter attended in May. Steve & I decided not to go because we would be on the road for the next 3 weekends. So, Ashley went with our pastor's family to Louisiana. She had a great time listening to the speakers, attending the family Confederate Ball, and going to Steve Wilkins' church on Sunday.

Since we did not make it to the conference, we asked Ashley to buy a set of the lectures. I was challenged by the comments made about states' rights and encouraged to read Flannery O'Connor after hearing these excellent speakers.

I try to always have an audio cd in the van so I can listen to it after I drop off the kids at whatever activity they have. In addition to your readings, try listening to audio workshops, audio books or audio sermons. You will be glad you did.

It's Been A Week...Offline

I've been offline for about a week now, while we move all our "stuff" into our new home/office and unpack. Actually it is quite refreshing to be offline for awhile. But, I always dread opening that inbox and seeing all the e-mail that needs responding. I think we have most of our home settled and I plan to hang pictures today...yea! I still need to set up my desk in our office...ugh.

One great thing about this move is the help our kids have been to us. They willingly ask what else needs to be done. My girls did all the "catch-up" in our business, shipping orders and returning e-mail. While we were on the road, we still received orders for homeschool curriculum & books. You know, the internet does not shut down after hours. That's the beauty of our business. Our most popular book, A Thomas Jefferson Education, continues to be a big seller online.

Another highlight of our trip included those concepts of leadership education that I learned...through tapes & books. I'll let you know about them in future posts.
