Do Kids Under 10 Need To Do Math?

I scrapped math with my youngest until he was 10 or 11, even though he liked math. Did it hurt him? NO! He completed the intermediate Math U See book in 1 1/2 yrs. and is now working on the advanced math book. He should finish this hear when he turns 13. Then, he's off to algebra.

This is not to say that he never "did" math during those early years. He often gave a math answer before his older sisters could. He just didn't do workbook math. Math is all around us if we will just tune into it and not be so dependent on math books.

When my middle daughter was about 12, I took her off math for a semester just to build a better attitude with math. When January came around she was refreshed and ready to go again.

I wish I had known about the math living books when he was younger. It would have been great to read Sir Cumference, Number Devil, What's Your Angle Pythagoras?, Mathematicians Are People Too and more like it during those early years. I have loved looking for math living books this year that we can stock in our store/website.

Sometimes it's hard to get off the conveyor belt. Remember you are the expert on your own kids and you know if they need to be doing math workbooks.
