Our close friend, Jon Gardner, passed along this quote from Martin Luther. You might be surprised to see what Luther said about schools 500 years ago...I sure was surprised at Luther's insight!! We were quite encouraged to know that we are making the Scripture supreme in our children's education....unlike education institutions.
"I am much afraid that the schools will prove the very gates of hell, unless they diligently labour in explaining the Holy Scriptures, and engraving them in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where the scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which means are not unceasingly occupied with the Word of God must be corrupt." (Martin Luther)
On a somewhate similar note, we have discussed the contents of Machiavelli's The Prince. Our kids are amazed that someone would espouse the philosophy of "the ends justify the means". They are so used to processing their thoughts and decisions through the grid of God's Scriptures. Although we are encouraged to see their thought processes, we still strive to teach them more Biblical principles in which they can use through the rest of their lives. Thank goodness for curricula that encourage Biblical worldview such as Truth Quest History and Gileskirk Humanities.
As we talked about this Machiavellian concept, we discussed the fact that America's mindset, for the most part, is based on doing whatever is necessary in order to accomplish one's goals. We desire a more Biblical mindset-one of following God's Word to determine the means in which one will accomplish the end goal. We realize a change to Biblical thinking will not happen overnight, but will take a few generations. It is our prayer and hope that this change to follow God's Word will happen in our grandchildren's lifetimes.
How are you preparing your children for a Biblical worldview in life? If you don't have a way to prepare try using Truth Quest History or Gileskirk Humanities.
