Why Study the Classics?? - 1:48 PM, Jun. 18, 2005
So many people believe that classics are just old books, irrelevant. Nothing could be further from the fact.
So, why study classics?
1. Classics teach us about human nature-Human nature is the same as always. Solomon is right when he says that there is nothing new under the sun.
2. Classics bring us Face-to-Face with Greatness-When we study literature we want to become greater. When we read the classics we meet the greats of all time and can be changed from there.
3. Classics force us to think-What a concept! We live in a society that does not like to think - just tell me what to do and I will do it! Although classics may begin as a chore, an assignment, they can eventually become entertainment and wonderful to discuss. Your ideas become bigger, deeper and more powerful.
4. Classics connect us to those who hare the stories -We meet the authors themselves as we read their works. Culture becomes alive to those who read the classics. National & family stories are handed down through the classics.
